Modern composite fillings restore decayed teeth while maintaining a natural appearance. Unlike older silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings match the color of your natural teeth and require less removal of healthy tooth structure.

The Benefits of Composite Fillings

At BluSky Dental Centrepointe, we use tooth-colored composite fillings exclusively. These restorations offer significant advantages over older filling materials.

Natural Appearance

Composite fillings are carefully color-matched to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Unlike silver amalgam fillings, which are conspicuous and darken over time, composite fillings look like part of your original tooth. This is especially important for visible front teeth, but even back teeth deserve a natural appearance.

Conservative Tooth Preparation

Composite fillings require less removal of healthy tooth structure than amalgam fillings. Your dentist removes only the decayed portion and a small amount of surrounding tooth to ensure the filling bonds securely. This preserves more of your natural tooth.

Mercury-Free

Composite fillings contain no mercury, eliminating concerns about mercury exposure. While dental amalgam has been used safely for over 150 years, many patients prefer mercury-free materials. Composite fillings address these preferences while delivering excellent clinical performance.

Versatile Applications

Composite fillings can restore teeth damaged by decay, wear, or trauma. We can also use composite to close small gaps between teeth, repair chipped edges, or change the shape of teeth for improved aesthetics.

Show Less Staining With Time

While composite fillings may eventually stain, they typically show less discoloration than amalgam fillings over decades of use.

Bonded Directly To Tooth

Composite fillings bond chemically to tooth structure, often providing additional reinforcement to weakened teeth. This adhesive quality means your dentist can sometimes place smaller fillings than would be possible with other materials.

The Filling Process

The procedure is straightforward and can usually be completed in a single appointment. After removing decay, we clean the tooth thoroughly and apply a bonding agent. We then place composite resin in layers, hardening each layer with a special blue light. Finally, we shape and polish the filling to match your bite and tooth contours.

Catch Cavities Early—They're Easier to Treat

Small cavities treated with composite fillings are simpler and less expensive than waiting until decay becomes extensive. Regular checkups help us find cavities at the earliest stage.

Dental Filling FAQs

No. We numb the tooth and surrounding area before preparing it for the filling. You'll feel pressure and vibration from the drill, but no pain. If you experience any discomfort, let us know and we can apply more anesthetic.

Composite fillings typically last 5–10 years, though some last longer. Longevity depends on the size of the filling, how well you care for your teeth, your bite force, and your dietary habits. We'll monitor your fillings at each checkup.

You can eat once the numbness wears off, usually within 2–3 hours. Avoid very hard, sticky, or chewy foods for at least a few hours to allow the filling to harden fully. Avoid extremely hot drinks during the first 24 hours.

Silver (amalgam) fillings were the standard before composite materials became refined enough for reliable clinical use. Many people have amalgam fillings that are functioning well. If you want to replace them for cosmetic or health reasons, we can discuss options.

Call us immediately. Avoid chewing on that tooth, as food and bacteria can enter the cavity. We can usually repair or replace the filling at your next appointment. If pain occurs, over-the-counter pain relievers can help temporarily.
