This guide will help you prepare for your first visit and know what to expect.

Scheduling Your First Appointment

To schedule your first appointment, you can:

When scheduling, let us know if you have any special needs, accessibility requirements, or dental anxiety. This helps us prepare the best experience for you.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

Please bring the following to your first appointment:

  • Photo ID — A valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.)
  • Dental Insurance Card — Your plan number and member ID. We'll verify coverage and submit claims on your behalf.
  • Medical History — A list of current medications, allergies (especially to medications), and any medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
  • Previous Dental Records — If you have recent records from another dentist, we can request them with your authorization.
  • Emergency Contact — Contact information for an emergency contact.
  • Payment Method — Credit card, debit card, or checkbook for any co-payments or out-of-pocket costs.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first visit typically lasts 60–90 minutes and includes:

  1. Registration & Paperwork (10 minutes)
Our receptionist will help you complete patient registration forms, confirm your insurance, and review our privacy policy.
  2. Consultation (10 minutes)
You'll meet with a dental assistant or hygienist to discuss your dental health goals, concerns, and any anxiety you may experience.
  3. Comprehensive Oral Exam (15 minutes)
Our dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, tongue, and oral tissues to assess your overall oral health.
  4. Diagnostic X-Rays (5 minutes)
We'll take digital X-rays to visualize areas we can't see during the visual exam. Digital X-rays use 80% less radiation than traditional film.
  5. Professional Cleaning (20 minutes)
Our hygienist will professionally clean your teeth, removing plaque and tartar buildup for a clear picture of your gum health.
  6. Treatment Discussion (10 minutes)
Our dentist will discuss findings and recommend treatment options, costs, and scheduling. We won't recommend unnecessary treatment — only what benefits your health.
  7. Preventive Planning (5 minutes)
We'll discuss a preventive care plan tailored to your needs, including recommended frequency of checkups and professional cleanings.

Payment Methods

  • Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)
  • Debit
  • Cash
  • Insurance direct billing
  • Payment plans for larger treatment costs

Financial Concerns

If cost is a concern, please discuss this with us. We may be able to adjust treatment plans or offer payment arrangements.

Dental Anxiety & Phobia

Many people feel anxious about dental treatment. You're not alone — dental anxiety affects millions of Canadians. We want you to feel safe and comfortable.

Ways We Help Anxious Patients

  • Open Communication — Tell us about your anxiety. We'll discuss your specific concerns and work together to address them.
  • Slow, Explanatory Approach — We explain each step before we do it, so nothing surprises you.
  • Break Signals — Raise your hand if you need a break during treatment. We'll stop immediately.
  • Distraction Techniques — We offer headphones with music, ceiling-mounted TVs, and other distractions.
  • Nitrous Oxide — "Laughing gas" helps you relax during treatment while remaining conscious and responsive.
  • Sedation Dentistry — For patients with severe anxiety, we offer oral sedation options.
  • Graduated Exposure — We can start with non-invasive treatments to help you become comfortable before more complex care.

After Your First Appointment

Following your first visit, you may experience:

  • Tooth Sensitivity — If you haven't had a cleaning in a while, your teeth may feel sensitive afterward. This typically resolves within a few days. Use sensitivity toothpaste and avoid very hot or cold foods.
  • Minor Gum Soreness — Your gums may feel tender after cleaning, especially if you have gum disease. This typically improves within 24 hours.
  • Follow-Up Communication — We may call or email to ensure you had a good experience and answer any questions.
  • Next Appointment — We'll help you schedule your next preventive visit (typically every 6 months) before you leave.
  • Home Care Recommendations — We'll provide specific recommendations for brushing, flossing, and other preventive care.
