Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication (usually a benzodiazepine like triazolam) approximately 30-45 minutes before your dental appointment. Unlike nitrous oxide, which you breathe, oral sedation is a pill that enters your bloodstream and gradually produces a deeper state of relaxation. This makes oral sedation ideal for patients with significant dental anxiety, phobia, or those undergoing complex procedures that require extended appointments.

The medication begins working within 30-45 minutes. You'll notice a gradually increasing sense of relaxation and drowsiness. Your perception of time will become very distorted—a 60-minute procedure might feel like 10 minutes. Many patients become so relaxed that they drift in and out of light sleep, though you remain responsive to gentle stimulation and commands. You're not fully asleep, but you're deeply relaxed and largely unaware of what's happening.

This altered consciousness is precisely what makes oral sedation so effective for anxious patients. You won't perceive the dental sounds, sensations, or procedures. You won't be stressed by the experience. Afterward, many patients report feeling as though only minutes passed when an hour or more of treatment was completed.

During your appointment, we continuously monitor your vital signs—heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen level, and respiratory rate—using professional monitoring equipment. After your appointment, the medication continues working for several hours. You'll feel drowsy and your judgment, coordination, and reflexes will be impaired. This is why you must have a responsible adult drive you home. You cannot operate a vehicle or machinery, and you should plan the rest of your day as recovery time. The medication typically wears off completely by evening, though you may feel slightly drowsy or tired the next day.
