Gum Disease Treatment

Protecting Your Gum Health
Gum disease affects nearly half of adults over 30 and is the leading cause of tooth loss. At BluSky Dental Centrepointe, our hygiene team uses thorough scaling and root planing techniques to remove bacteria below the gum line and help your gums heal.
Early-stage gum disease is often painless, which is why regular check-ups are so important. We screen for periodontal issues at every visit and create personalized maintenance plans for patients who need ongoing care.
Stop Gum Disease Before It Causes Tooth Loss
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. But here's the good news: gum disease is preventable and treatable when caught early.
Gum disease begins with inflammation caused by plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line. In its early stage (gingivitis), the disease is completely reversible. Without treatment, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis—a serious infection that damages the supporting bone and tissues holding your teeth in place.
Many patients don't realize they have gum disease because early symptoms are subtle: slightly puffy or tender gums, bleeding when brushing, or persistent bad breath. These warning signs often go ignored until significant damage has occurred.
At BluSky Dental Centrepointe, we use comprehensive periodontal evaluation to detect gum disease in its earliest stages. Our treatment approach is evidence-based and tailored to your specific condition.
For early gum disease, we perform scaling and root planing (SRP)—a deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque and tartar below the gum line and smooths the tooth root to prevent bacteria reattachment. Local anesthetic is applied for your comfort. Most patients see significant improvement in gum health after SRP treatment.
We combine mechanical cleaning with antimicrobial therapy to eliminate deep bacterial infection. Some patients benefit from laser-assisted treatment, which uses targeted light energy to disinfect periodontal pockets and stimulate tissue healing.
After initial treatment, ongoing maintenance is critical. We recommend periodontal cleanings every 3-4 months to prevent disease recurrence. Home care—meticulous brushing, flossing, and antimicrobial rinse—is equally important.
Gum disease is linked to serious systemic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Treating gum disease doesn't just save your teeth—it protects your overall health.

Gum Disease Questions
Warning signs include red, swollen, or tender gums; bleeding when brushing or flossing; receding gums; persistent bad breath; loose teeth; or pus between teeth and gums. Some patients have no symptoms at all, which is why regular dental exams are crucial.
Early gum disease (gingivitis) is treated with improved home care and professional cleaning. Moderate to advanced disease requires scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), antimicrobial therapy, and possibly laser treatment. Severe cases may require surgical intervention.
We apply local anesthetic to numb the area, so the procedure is not painful. You may feel pressure and vibration, but no pain. Some sensitivity may occur for a few days after treatment.
Initial scaling and root planing may take multiple appointments depending on the severity of your disease. Most patients see improvement within 4-8 weeks. Long-term success depends on consistent home care and regular maintenance visits.
Early gingivitis can be completely reversed. Advanced periodontitis cannot be cured but can be well-managed with professional treatment and excellent home care to prevent further bone loss.
Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss daily, use antimicrobial rinse, avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol, eat a balanced diet, manage stress, and visit your dentist for regular cleanings and exams.
