Protect and Restore Your Teeth

BluSky Bee

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers your entire tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns protect weak teeth from further damage, restore teeth after root canals, replace large fillings, and make teeth look natural and beautiful. We offer traditional crowns, fast same-day crowns, and premium aesthetic options.

Why You Might Need a Crown

Crowns protect and restore teeth that are too damaged for fillings. Common reasons include large cavities, teeth weakened after root canal therapy, cracked or fractured teeth, severely worn teeth, or teeth with extensive prior fillings.

When decay is deep or a filling has failed, placing a new filling is risky—there's not enough healthy tooth structure left to hold it. A crown surrounds and protects the entire tooth, providing strength and durability that lasts 10-15 years or longer.

Root canal teeth particularly benefit from crowns. After treatment, the tooth becomes brittle and prone to fracture. A crown protects the tooth and prevents future problems, ensuring your root canal investment is preserved.

Crowns also address cosmetic concerns. We can reshape teeth, close gaps, change color, and improve appearance. Many patients combine functional restoration with aesthetic improvement in one treatment.

We offer several crown options. Traditional porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are durable and blend well with natural teeth. All-ceramic crowns look most natural and are ideal for visible teeth. We also offer same-day crowns using advanced CAD/CAM technology—you get your crown in one appointment instead of waiting two weeks.

The crown process begins with assessment. We examine the tooth and discuss whether a crown is appropriate. For a traditional crown, we prepare the tooth (remove decay and shape it), take impressions, and place a temporary crown. Your permanent crown is made at our lab and cemented at a second appointment. Same-day crowns skip the lab step—we mill and place your crown in one visit.

Modern crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. We match color, shape, and translucency carefully. Your new crown should blend seamlessly with your other teeth.

When Is a Crown Better Than a Filling?

Fillings work for small-to-moderate cavities. If decay affects more than half the tooth, or if a tooth has a large existing filling, a crown is usually better. Crowns last longer and are less likely to fail.

Dental Crown Questions

A well-made crown typically lasts 10-15 years, often longer. Longevity depends on the materials, your oral hygiene, and how hard you chew. Porcelain tends to last longer than composite. We've seen crowns last 20+ years with excellent care.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are durable and affordable, ideal for back teeth. All-ceramic crowns look most natural and are best for front teeth. Same-day crowns are milled from digital designs and placed immediately—no waiting. We recommend the best option based on tooth location and aesthetics.

The crown process is painless. Your tooth is numbed before preparation. You might feel pressure or vibration during shaping, but no pain. Some patients experience sensitivity after the crown is placed, which usually resolves within days. We'll discuss sensitivity management.

Not always. If the tooth nerve is healthy and not inflamed, you don't need a root canal. We assess the tooth and only recommend root canal if the nerve is compromised. Many crowned teeth remain vital without root treatment.

Treat your crown like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss carefully (under the crown edge), and avoid chewing hard objects. Some patients worry crowns are high-maintenance, but they require normal care. Avoid using teeth as tools and don't grind.

Crowns are cemented securely and rarely fall off if prepared and placed correctly. They can chip if you bite something extremely hard (like ice or hard candy), but this is rare. If a crown does fail, we can repair or replace it.

Crowns typically cost $800-$1500 per tooth, depending on material and complexity. Same-day crowns may cost slightly more due to technology but save you a second visit. Porcelain all-ceramic crowns are more expensive than porcelain-fused-to-metal. Dental insurance often covers 50% of crown costs. We discuss pricing upfront.
