Expert Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Experienced surgical extraction with detailed recovery support. Advanced care from your Nepean dentist.
Expert Wisdom Tooth Care
Wisdom teeth often emerge misaligned, partially impacted, or with insufficient room, leading to pain, infection, or damage to neighboring teeth. Dr. Wei uses digital X-rays to assess the position and development of your wisdom teeth and determine the best course of action.
When removal is recommended, we offer sedation options to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Most patients recover within a few days with proper aftercare—and we're here to support you every step of the way.
Wisdom Teeth Removal: What You Need to Know
Wisdom teeth are third molars that typically erupt between ages 17 and 25. While some people have sufficient space and never develop problems, many face complications that require extraction. At BluSky Dental Centrepointe, we provide expert surgical extraction with comprehensive pre- and post-operative care.
Wisdom teeth often become impacted—unable to erupt fully due to insufficient space or abnormal angle. Impacted teeth can cause pain, infection, crowding of adjacent teeth, and damage to bone or tooth roots. Some impacted teeth never cause symptoms but remain at risk for future problems. Others cause immediate pain and swelling. We use digital X-rays and cone-beam CT imaging to assess impaction and plan the most effective extraction approach.
Impaction severity varies. Some wisdom teeth are partially impacted and partially visible. Others are completely buried beneath gum and bone. Vertically impacted teeth (straight down) are usually simpler to remove than horizontally or mesially impacted teeth (angled sideways). Our clinical expertise allows us to assess complexity and discuss surgical options.
We use advanced surgical techniques to minimize tissue trauma and promote faster healing. After assessing the tooth position with imaging, we create an access opening, carefully remove bone if necessary, and extract the tooth in sections if needed. Throughout the procedure, we monitor your comfort and adjust anesthesia as needed.
Recovery varies by complexity. Simple extractions heal in 1-2 weeks. More complex surgical cases may require 7-10 days before returning to normal activities, though complete bone healing takes several months. We provide detailed post-operative instructions covering pain management, swelling reduction, activity restrictions, and diet modifications. Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how smoothly their recovery proceeds with proper guidance.
We discuss sedation options before surgery. Many patients prefer nitrous oxide or oral sedation to feel more relaxed during extraction, even if local anesthesia prevents pain.
Proactive Wisdom Teeth Management
Whether symptomatic or preventive, wisdom tooth extraction should be handled by an experienced clinician. BluSky Dental Centrepointe provides expert surgical care and detailed recovery support.
Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQ
Not always. We assess each patient's situation during a comprehensive exam using X-rays. If your wisdom teeth have sufficient space, are erupting properly, can be kept clean, and don't cause pain, they may not need removal. However, if they're impacted, crowding other teeth, difficult to clean, causing pain or swelling, or at risk for problems, removal is usually recommended. We discuss the risks and benefits to help you decide.
We'll review the procedure and anesthesia options during your consultation. On extraction day, we numb the area with local anesthesia and can provide sedation if desired. You'll feel pressure and hear sounds but no pain. The procedure takes 20-45 minutes depending on complexity. Afterward, you'll rest briefly before going home with a responsible adult if sedated. You'll receive detailed post-operative instructions.
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms after extraction dislodges prematurely, exposing bone and causing severe pain. It's uncommon (affects about 2-5% of extractions) but preventable. Follow our post-operative instructions carefully: don't use straws, smoking, or vigorous rinsing for 24 hours; avoid hard, hot foods; and be gentle when rinsing. If you develop severe pain after a few days, call us immediately—we can treat dry socket quickly.
Apply ice packs to the outside of your cheek for 20 minutes every 1-2 hours for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling. Take prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Keep your head elevated to minimize swelling. After the first 24 hours, gentle heat (warm compress) may provide comfort. Swelling usually peaks around day 2-3, then improves. Most patients return to normal activities within a week.
Rest for the remainder of extraction day. Most patients can return to work or school within 2-3 days for desk work. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and sports for 5-7 days—activity increases bleeding and swelling. By one week, most patients feel significantly better, though complete healing continues for several months. We'll advise you on your specific timeline during your post-operative visit.
